I was once told by a reliable source that Portage Des Sioux was originally founded by the Jesuit Priests who had ventured into the area. Because of the mineral rich soil many new comers settled into the area. The approximate date of this was around 1695 or so. The area flourished and grew for years being a good area for farming, trapping and hunting. It was also within close proximity of Camp Bellefontaine another well established area. When the French and Indian War happened around 1750 or so, the indians would raid the settlers and farmers in the area. They would seek shelter at a fort that was built at the modern day location of Portage Des Sioux. Whether this fort was one built by the settlers or someone else is unknown. There is no record of either the French nor the Spanish occupying a fort in this area officially. There is no record of this in the history books either. I am only willing to repeat this because the person who told me this comes from a family whose ancestry can be traced back to the mid 1700's in this area. They are one of the largest land owners in the area today.
