There was a neglected former Austro-Hungarian cavalry barracks at Auschwitz and a few other buildings before the camp was built in 1940. There was also a house inside the perimeter of Auschwitz II (Birkenau) that was converted into a gas chamber.

Auschwitz I- Birkenau
Auschwitz had 3 big 'main' camps. They were called Auschwitz I, Auschwitz Birkenau and Auschwitz Monowitz. Monowitz was really a sub camp which was commonly used and when expanded did become as part of the main camps. Out of the lot, Auschwitz Birkenau was the biggest and most feared of as this part was about Extermination when the Final Solution was putted in place.
It had 3 sections. Auschwitz-I, which served as a working camp. Auschwitz II-Birkenau, the death camp. Auschwitz-III, it was used to provide slave labor to the nearby industry.
From early 1942 Auschwitz operated as both. The only other camp that served as both a concentration camp and extermination camp was Majdanek.
a result of Auschwitz being built was having an area which has some camps and several subcamps and also, use the area as part of the Nazi killings. A result of auschwitz was that 1.2 million jews died and millions of reichmarks was made from the slave workings ____________________________ Some causes of Auschwitz and its expansion include: a need to house those deemed as criminal in Poland. the need to house Soviet POWs used for slave labour the need to house increaced number of Jewish internees. the need to provide labour for the large chemical companies not far away. the idea of exporting Nazi anti-Jewish measures. the inefficiency of the gas vans and the 'action reinhardt' camps.
Auschwitz was established by Heinrich Himmler.
