Wyandanch, chief of the Montauks, appears to have controlled all the tribes of Long Island - except, perhaps, the Canarsees. Settlers who made written agreements with local chiefs always made sure to have the document confirmed by Wyandanch as well, such was his influence in the area.
He was a true friend to the English settlers and earned their respect and friendship in return. Once his daughter was captured and her intended husband killed by Narragansetts who had begun a bitter war with the Montauks in 1652; Lyon Gardiner rescued the girl and returned her to Wyandanch, who gratefully donated a large area of land to Gardiner.
Eventually Wyandanch died, his people were reduced by war and disease and they joined white settlers at East Hampton, where they were treated kindly.
