Were German generals smart in world war 2?

Most nations in WWII had a least a few excellent combat generals. But the Germans had a great many more than any other nation. They had a tradition of excellence stretching back to Frederick the Great of Prussia, who invented the modern general staff in the mid 1700s. Despite this amazing and awe inspiring wealth of talent, Hitler would often not listen to his generals nor take their advice. Hitler, who had risen to corporal in four years of service in WWI, believed himself to be a military genius. If his generals persisted in telling him things he did not want to hear, he would fire them. Knowledgeable Allied commanders felt Hitler was worth at least an entire field army to the Allies, from his hampering of the efforts of his extremely capable commanders.
