At the commencement of hostilities, the 38th Parallel divided North and South Korea. An oft-cited claim, namely that four years of armies advancing and retreating along the peninsula resulted in little change to pre-war borders, is inaccurate. For example, Kaesong, the ancient capital of Korea, was wrested away from South Korea; it is a mid-sized city, approximately 350,000 people, and one of the most developed industrial cities of North Korea. Also as a result of the Armistice (and resulting DMZ borders), South Korea gained large swaths of land past the 38th Parallel in the center and eastern portions of the peninsula (roughly equivalent in size to the State of Delaware), including a major hydroelectric dam near the Sea of Japan.
