According to The Bible, there was an almost constant state of war between the two kingdoms, with no clear outcome, for the first sixty years of the divided kingdoms, as two equally matched antagonists fought for supremacy (1 Kings 14:30; 15:6,16).

However, this biblical account simply does not correlate with the archaeological record, which shows that Israel had a far larger population than early Judah. Some modern scholars even suggest that Judah itself was not yet united under a single ruler until around 900 BCE. It is infeasible that Judah could have held the Israelites in subjugation or that they could fight a protracted civil war against the northern kingdom. Israel was, for a short period, a minor regional power, while Judah was a more impoverished rural community. Nevertheless, the biblical account must point to at least a degree of friction and sporadic violence between the two early kingdoms.

Syria and Israel are in a de jure state of war, since the Syrian declaration of war with Israel in 1948 was never supplemented by a peace treaty. However, Syrian and Israeli forces have not engaged militarily since the Lebanese Civil War in the early 1980s. Syria currently is engaged in a civil war and has more important things to worry about than Israel.
