In the old times, no. Different caste systems were in place and the lower you were in the Caste System the worse you were treated and you were born into a caste system and could never get out of it. Though you could be a wonderful Hindu philosopher in the untouchable class. Now the caste system has essentially vanished though.
Hindus do Believe in equality, but the concept of equality is slightly different. Hinduism focuses on giving a person what he or she deserves rather than giving everyone the same resources, utilisation is also ve4ry important.
