There does not seem to be a specific popular movement to abolish the genuflection although there have been organic changes that have seen it fall into disuse among certain rites. Some Catholic orthodox rites, for instance, make instead a metasis, which is a profound bow accompanied by the sign of the cross. Certain orders of monks use both the genuflection as well as a profound bow as a sign of reverence.
