We know know that global warming began in the Industrial Revolution, more than 200 years ago, when we began to burn fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) and release their age-old reserves of carbon dioxide.

One hundred years ago scientists were just beginning to think something was happening. Svante Arrhenius (1859-1927), a Swedish scientist developed what is now know as the 'greenhouse gas law' in 1896.

Why wasn't global warming a problem a thousand years ago?

1000 years ago there was no global warming, just the normal warming of the earth by the sun. Global warming started when we discovered fossil fuels and started burning them seriously, at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, about 250 years ago. This burning released age-old carbon dioxide that had been hidden underground for 300 million years. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, so extra gas in the atmosphere captures more heat, and this is global warming.

Why wasn't global warming a problem thousands of years ago?

We only seriously began burning fossil fuels around 200 years ago, when the Industrial Revolution began. This releases carbon dioxide that has been hidden away for 300 million years, and this was the trigger for global warming.

How long as global warming been here?

Global Warming, that is the warming of the earth since the beginning of the Industrial Age, began when man discovered fossil fuels some 250 years ago. There were commercial coal mines in the US state of Virginia in 1740.

Will people have to live differently when global warming happens?

Sometimes global warming does change how people live. For example, the time to plant gardens after winter is now earlier in some places than it was 20 years ago.

How can global warming cause colder winters?

Global Warming may or may not cause colder winters. Global warming refers to a climate change whereas colder winters are yearly weather patterns. On average the Climate and the World is warming up. It is a fact that the average temperatures are hotter than twenty or even ten years ago. So, whether you blame it on humans or natural cycles, global warming is happening. However, the colder winters we have had the past few years are possibly imperfections in global warming and may end soon. Also, some places are affected differently at different times. For example, the East had record snowfall this past winter, but other places had record heat this past winter. So yearly weather patterns can sometimes cause colder winters.

How many years ago was it when there was no global warming?

250 years ago we seriously began burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas). This was the start of the Industrial Revolution, and the beginning of Global warming.

Is global warming anthropogenic?

Yes, global warming is anthropogenic, which means 'caused by human activity'. Humans began burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) at the start of the Industrial Revolution, 200 years ago. Over the years this has added billions of tonnes of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, and is the main cause of global warming.

How long has global warming hit Earth?

We know now that global warming started in the Industrial Revolution, more than 200 years ago, when we discovered and started to burn fossil fuels, which released carbon dioxide (CO2). This is one of the greenhouse gases that are causing global warming.

What is it like in the Winter in Flint Michigan?

It is cold and humid. Fair amount of snow, but not like it was 30 years ago. Global warming sucks.

How long ago was it when Man made Global Warming started?

In the industrial revolution (a period beginning in the 18th century) when man began to burn fossil fuels. About 250 years ago.
