The popularization of snuff, and later pipes, began in 16th Century Europe. Tobacco is native to North and South America, and became a medicine or recreational drug only after it was discovered in the New World, apparently in Cuba on the first or second voyage of Columbus. As a valuable crop, it was the first grown for export in the American colonies during their settlement in the 17th century.
