Why was President John F Kennedy's image after his assassination much brighter than when he was alive?

I do not remember that his image was brighter after his assassination. The way I remember it is that just about the entire country loved JFK and was terribly hurt and shocked when he was killed. In fact, I would say his image was tarnished a bit when that information about Marilyn Monroe got spread around after his death. Of course, I was only in the fourth grade and not keeping up with politics at all, so someone might have more information or remember it differently than I do.
