Founded in 1856 but not until 1863 was Wilberforce University listed as the first fully owned and operated college by African Americans. In 1863, Bishop Daniel Payne was the first African American to own and become a college president in the United States. Bishop Payne served as president from 1863 to 1873.
There are a number of historically black colleges in the south. Among the oldest are what was originally called Hampton Institute in Hampton, Virginia; Fisk University in Nashville TN; Philander Smith College in Little Rock, AR; and Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.
