Yazid Bin Muawiyah bin abu sufyan Radya Allah anhu was a Muslim, infact his grandfather abusufyan was one of prophet Mohammad's pbuh very close companions, the story your probably asking this about goes back when Uthman Ibn affan became the third calipha, wich is muwaiyas cousin, he appointed muawiya as a governor of syria, but when Ali R.A took the place of fourth calipha he excpelled him, and muawiyah refused to obey ali, because it was said ali didnt do his best to put the killer of othman to justice, so ali decided to go and fight muawiya, but ali didnt find much support from the Muslim world because the issue of him not bringing the killer of the calipha othman to justice and muawiya had alot of support from syria, and this was the start of the fitna, Ali Radya Allah anhu was killed and his son hasan signed a truce that he would retire to private life, then Muawiya appointed his son yazid as his successor. and basically their was a fight for power between the two nephews and eventually Hussein son of ali was killed by yazid son of muawiya, radia Allah anhum all, and may Allah forgive them all, but they where all Muslims. and this is where the shia and sunni thing evolved, shia believe that the calipha is suppose to be inherited and sunnis say that the four calipha's abu bakr othman Omar and ali all where caliphas radia Allah anhum!
