Benjamin L Roden was indeed the "founder' of the Branch Davidian Seventh-Day Adventists, not David Koresh.
The question at hand is one that is not important. The Branch Davidians had apocalyptic expectations of a fiery end. The "bugs" placed by the FBI in the compound had evidence that a "fuel" was spread by the Davidians. Hay had been stacked up inside as a bullet block. These people, as much as they used firearms, knew hay would not stop a bullet. The hay was set to have the fire, Koresh preached about, spread more rapidly. Whether an explosion from the tear gas canister or an ignition from a Branch Davidian caused the fire is not important. The Branch Davidians had ample time to come out, surrender, and give up. They stayed and waited for the apocalypse in which Koresh taught. Either way, The Branch Davidians got what they had been looking for in their pursuit for salvation.
