In the aftermath of World War II, only one U.S. soldier- a Private Eddie Slovik was actually executed ( By firing squad) for the crime of war-time desertion. Slovik was a former plumbing apprentice and a small-time hood, that ideally should not have been in the Army to begin with. He was the only Deserter executed in the whole war effort of the US. A book and motion picture were made about the depressing Slovik saga- it occured near or during the Christmas season, to add misery.
