The crest is the highest part of a of the wave and the trough is the lower part of the wave. The longitudinal waves move the medium parallel to the direction the wave is moving. Longitudinal waves have compressions and rare fractions. The compression in a longitudinal wave in the part where the particles are close together, rarefaction is when the particles are spread out.
