As the Allfather of the Aesir, Odin was revered for many reasons. Wisdom and forsight not being the least of them. As a battle god he was worshipped by warriors for his might and honour and courage (hence one of his many names; The terrible one). Men would honour him by following his example; by attempting to become like him. Strength at arms was a most prized attribute; a man was not a man unless he could fight bravely and with great honour, but that was not enough. Men sought wisdom as well as strength and in doing so, strove to learn all that was learnable. A warrior without wisdom was considered no warrior at all. In one of his many prefered forms, Odin represented the link between age and wisdom. For this reason it was common for young men to be considered foolish. He would visit Middle Earth as a wisened old man and pose riddles to those he considered worthy, rewarding those who answered correctly. Men who followed him in this walk often became great poets. Odin was also a personification of the wind. (This may be the origin of the term "ride like the wind"). Men would live free lives, like the wind, and would come and go at will. These are only a few ways in which Odin was honoured. Each man would invariably have a different interpretation of Odins nature, but all would strive to be like him in some way or another.
