Initially they were the bulk of the Roman citizens. Most had hectare-sized blocks, and the city-state had common land on which they relied to graze their ploughing ox and garner fruits and nuts to supplement their limited land. With their absence on military service the large landowners progressively siezed the common land, making it impossible for the small owners to subsist and they were reduced sharply in numbers, through military casualties and loss of their farms. The large owners were the aristocracy, and turned increasingly to slaves as cheap workers. The number of small farmers was sustained only by the provision of land to retired soldiers as Rome conquered more territory and settled them in the new provinces.
