They are kept in the armoury & you have to check them out if you go to the range. You are assigned your own at every duty station while you are there & responsible for it's care. If you change stations, it stays & you get a new one at your next station-so they don't travel. You are only given live rounds when authorized & even then, there is a metal cover kept over gunbarrel (& unloaded) when walking around. Generally blanks are used for all exercises & range rounds are strictly accounted for & handed out while you are there. Everyone gets an M-16 (regardless of actual job) & must qualify every year. officers get a 45.
