They were the first to secede from the Union. South Carolina was one of the richest colonies and is/was known for its beatiful beaches! WOW!!!!
John Hancock was usually said to be the richest man in the colonies, but Washington was extremely wealthy. The sources of most of Washington's wealth were his inheritance from his older half-brother, and his marriage to a rich widow.

People were either wealthy planters who owned large sucsesful plantations or the were poor white farmers. but most of the population was made up by slaves.
