Ancient Egyptian peasants were typically paid in beer, onions, and bread. Some were fortunate enough to be given legumes, vegetables, and lentils--but this was not a common practice. It greatly depended on who they worked for, and where. The bread they were paid with was a lot more hearty and chewy than the flat breads that are often consumed there, now. Archaeologists that have done dental analysis were able to tell exactly what the bread was like. Onions were the main source of flavoring and nutrition for most Egyptians, and legumes were their staple source of protein, as meat was entirely too expensive. This is why many in Egypt are vegetarians and vegans, even today.
