No. Aristocrats were officially appointed by the King in their offices and their powers were often described and limited by law. They were powerful mostly until the late 19th and early 20th century, when the majority of the population in most countries got the right to vote. So they did not 'take away' power from anyone. They exercised it in an age when the common people did not yet have political rights.

The tyrants took over
Sparta had a limited democracy which suited their needs. Athens had a dominant aristocracy which they overthrew and established a dictator (tyrant) to keep the aristocrats under control. When the Athenians tired of the tyrant, they replaced him with a limited democracy, the aristocrats took power again to resist the Persian invasion, and the people then replaced them with a democracy again led by Ephialtes, whom the aristocrats assassinated. His deputy Pericles took over and experimented with a radical democracy. This resulted in their leader leading them astray, and their defeat in the Peloponnesian War. They reverted to a limited democracy similar to the Spartan one.
Monarchies were formed so that people could keep order but not like a dictator. Especially in an absolute monarchy.
In Athens, the tyrants were welcomed by the majority, but hated by the aristocrats whose power they curtailed. To avoid assassination they had to hire a large bodyguard force, and to pay for it, had to levy a tax. Greeks hated taxes, and eventually after a generation, they had forgotten how bad things had been under the aristocrats and expelled the tyrants. The aristocrats tried to take over again, but Cleisthenes took over and established a democracy.
People were starving while the Aristocrats were living in luxury. So they finally had enough, stormed the Bastille, and then stormed the palace. They rounded up all the aristocrats and went on a bloody rampage by guillotining most of the aristocrats and their staff. This is when Napoleon Bonaparte, who was a Captain in the French Army, took over the command, became a general, and led the French revolution.
