Most people who lived in castles were members of a castle garrison. Some castles were occupied by the lords or kings who owned them, but castles were usually sufficiently uncomfortable that the owners lived elsewhere, possibly in nearby manor houses. When the owners lived in the castles, servants and workers of various kinds would also have lived there.

∙ 13y agoThe central courtyard of a castle was the bailey. The bailey had stables, workshops, temporary food storage, and barracks, where most of the soldiers in the castle lived. Sometimes a house was built in the bailey for the lord and his family. There was sometimes a great hall in the castle, which was usually partitioned for offices and so on. Among the partitioned areas might be cubicles for individuals of some distinction to sleep in. There was sometimes an apartment for the lord and his family in the keep.
Some buildings called castles were actually fortified manor houses. These were organized more like manor house were in general.
Many of the people who worked in castles might live in nearby villages.
