A lot of the time, they were literally lined up against a wall and the potential hosts would take their pick.
Some people were required to take them in if they lived in the country and had enough room, this could lead to evacuees being poorly treated by thier host families.
They were sat along benches, or in a line, and the hosts picked you out. clean, pretty, children, nicely dressed were often chosen first, and the children had no control over who they went with.
