Many slaves did as alot of us do today. they would get a tree if allowed and they would decorate it with the things that was precious to them. it may seem like junk to others, but it was important to them. they shared things that they made and it showed their craftmanship and people back then appreciated things more than what we do today. i would much rather a person make me something than for them to spend alot of money on something. i keep things that people have made me over the years and every Christmas i add them to the tree. i also keep the flowers that are given me. espically if they are wild. they may not appear again, but i can say that i have one from my grandchildren. i tell them not to buy anything but to make it so i can keep it from Christmas to Christmas. and this is what slaves did for Christmas each year. and if they lost it, they would start all over again. It should be about family and not about what a person gives you or how much something cost. it should be about love and family. if i did not receive anything, as long as i have my family, i have the greatest gift in the world for Christmas.
Slave's would be allowed to take the day off. They didn't have to work and the slave masters would allow them express their spirits. I got this off the Frederick Douglass narrative. It may have varied in different places.
Slaves were often not allowed to celebrate Christmas. Slaves were not thought of as people and certainly not valued at all.

They would gather in a big building (away from all whites) and celebrate the way we do. But Christmas was always a pitiful time for the slaves. They were made to stay with their masters. Not allowed to see their families. What a fun life. (sarcasm for the stupidly impaired)

It was a time for them to come together, celebrate, and temporarily forget about the hardships of slavery.
