The Altair sold a few thousand units in 1975. Today, more than 130 million personal computers are sold each year! How did we get here, and which computer platforms were around for the journey? A lot of people who have come into personal computing recently do not know that there were once many different platforms-- a glance at a 1980 issue of Popular Computing revealed over 100 different manufacturers of incompatible brands!

∙ 15y agoThe earliest electronic digital computers were used for military applications, such as calculating ship gun elevations during World War II. ENIAC (credited as the "first computer") was used for this purpose. Later computers were used in large companies and universities. The first multi-purpose home computers in wide use were introduced in the late 1970's and early 1980's by several companies such as Apple, Tandy, Commodore, Timex, Atari and IBM. IBM and Apple eventually dominated the market for home computing to the present day, though IBM-based computers are manufactured by several other companies.
