The first cameras, oddly enough, were invented, built and used by amateurs. At that time, there were no professional photographers. Everyone was an amateur. When the several methods of making photographs began to be reliable, then photographers began charging for their work, and became professionals.

The very first cameras, called "camera obscura," were used by artists to help them paint pictures. A camera obscura was a room with a small pinhole in one wall that let in the only light. The artist stood inside this totally dark room with his canvas on the wall opposite the wall containing the pinhole. An upside down and backwards image of the scene to be painted was projected onto the canvas and the artist could paint what he saw directly where he saw it on the canvas.

When was zoom first invented for cameras?

For cameras, about 1902. Production of the patent from that year did not take place until about 1932 and was used in 35mm movie cameras as the first true zoom (meaning the focal plane did not shift appreciably when the lens was zoomed). The concept was first invented for telescopes around 1834, but it was a varifocal lens, in that it did not maintain focus when zoomed).
