I believe there were minesweepers in WW2, but not very many. There were a lot of Minesweepers in WW2, MSO's, MSC's and others MSO's were Ocean Going Minesweepers MSC's were Coastal Going Minesweepers, smaller than MSO's I served aboard the USS Loyalty MSO-457 in the Vietnam War.

Hellicoptors have taken the place of ships for this type of work. They are faster and the crew faces less danger.
