Catholic AnswerOf course, if you count the American colonies as "the United States" but there wasn't a United States until the mid 18th century. The various first wave of explorers and settlers from Europe were all Catholics from Spain, starting with Christopher Columbus in the sixteenth century. 1565 was the establishment of the first continously inhabited city (by the Europeans) in North America: St. Augustine in what is now Florida.
