Undoubtedly, being a woman, being black, and wanting to go into science were challenges: she came from Jamaica (where there do not seem to be many women microbiologists), and she entered a field that does not have many women of color in it. She does not speak much about obstacles in her interviews, however. She is a successful scientist with a very positive attitude.
