They just didn't want to experience that military boot camp (when they got inducted). But who wanted to admit to that? It was far more acceptable to say "that they thought the war was immoral" or "unjust", etc.

Another words, for the vast majority, draft dodgers were afraid of the military (especially boot camp) not the war.
