Yes, they were. That's why some old TV programs said explicitly "In living color!" at the beginning of the show; to make people want to buy a color TV.

In fact, the NBC Peacock symbol was there for the same reason; each of the peacock's feathers were a different color. If you only had a black and white TV, the peacock was showing you what you were missing.

No in the olden days they did not have colour on the tv because colour tv's were not invented in the days.

To clarify, it is important to understand a few facts about cathode ray tube televisions from the early days of TV. Cathode ray tubes were used to display images recorded in an electronic format, usually electronic tape storage such as early commercial use only versions of betamax and reel to reel, to a luminescent screen. The original TVs could only handle one color, basically, white. That white was grey-scaled to give what is called black and white television images. Later TVs used three Cathode Ray guns and three color filters to display color information. If prior recordings or rebroadcasts were in gray scale then the color televisions would display the image as gray-scale or black and white. So to answer your question, black and white televisions displayed images of a black and white world, until color was invented. after color was invented then color TVs showed black and white images of a black and white world, and color images of the multi-chromatic world
