In general, most people were poorly educated. Middle and upper class women would, however, be quite well educated. They would be able to read and write, and would know at least some history, music, classics, art, dancing, politics, etc. They would also be educated in female "accomplishments" like embroidery , poetry, clothes making, etc. It varied depending on the family. Some women wrote and had published their own books, such as novels, travel guides, or non-fiction.

Good examples of particularly well educated women in the eighteenth century are:

-Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire- art, classics, poetry writer, fiction and non fiction writer, science, geology, politics, travel, letter writing, etc.

-Lady Mary Wortley Montagu- poetry writer, fiction and none fiction writer, writer of travel guides, art, history, classics, travel, letter writing, etc.

-Louisa Connolly- education of children, architecture, accounting, art, classics, etc.

-Caroline Fox (mother of Charles James Fox)- politics, art, classics, etc.
