The main reason that the system is so easy to use is that it works on a basis of 10s. For example, if you wanted to convert inches to feet in the standard American system, you would need to divide the number of inches by 12 inches in a foot and unless you are using a simple amount of inches, this can be quite cumbersome. In the metric system, however, if you wanted to say convert centimeters to meters, you would simply move the decimal because it works on the system of 10s (10 centimeters to a decimeter, 10 decimeters to a meter, etc.). These means that if for example you wanted to convert 2543 centimeters to meters, you would simply move the decimal two places to the left and you would get 25.43 meters. Hope this help and I know there is a lot more to this but I tried to keep it brief.

it is a unit of measurement that is easy to convert and is used world wide so if you take a measurement in china with the metric units it will equal the same in America.

One might be that most of the countries in the world use the metric system. Another, in case you are some where else(like Another Country) you don't have to worry about conversions if you were using the metric system in the first place! Another (more accurate reason) would be that it is decimal based

Since it is a base 10 decimal system for all units it is much simpler to convert from one unit to another, a simple matter of moving the decimal point. i.e. 500 grams is 0.5 kilograms, 20 kilogrames is 0.02 metric tons

Converting imperial measures requires more complicated math, ounces to pounds, pounds to tons etc.

In all reality the imperial system has no real advantages other than being the system the world used first. As of now there are only three places that still use the imperial system The United States of America,Liberia and Burma. The reason the rest of the world has moved on is that is more accurate and easier to use. The conversion from lower to higher measurements is only a matter of taking a way a zero or adding a zero. And all being a measurement of greater or less than a metre. a millimetre being one thousandth of a meter and a kilometre being 1000 metres; so on centi(meaning 100 as in century or 100)metre means one one hundredth of a metre. so if you were to break a metre down into its separate measurements:

1 metre is 10 decimetres

1 metre is 100 centimetres

1 metre is 1000 millimetres

now lets break down a yard......ready to be confused?

1 yard is 3 feet

1 yard is 36 inches ...wha?

and there are 1000 metres in a kilometre

How many yards in a mile? 1760 yards...HUH?

An international system of units, such as the metric system, has one primary advantage. No matter where you go in the world, it's the same. The united states is one of only a few nations that has not accepted the metric system as it's base system. This leaves the U.S. at a slight disadvantage on the world market because everyone else uses a different system that requires mathematical conversions to understand. If everyone used the same system, it would eliminate a lot of confusion in international trade done by small companies.

The units of the metric system are scaled up and down by factors of 10 (or powers of ten). Since we count in tens, this makes scaling up or down a lot simpler.

For example, for lengths, all you need to know are the 10, 100 or 1000 times tables. In the Imperial system you would need 12 (inch to foot), 3 (foot to yard), 22 (yard to chain), 10 (chain to furlong), 8 (furlong to mile).

Another important advantage is that the majority of the world's developed nations use the metric system.
