My setup, as cheap as I can get it, though I can upgrade slowly and mobo has 4 PCI-e. Can use 2 x GPU crossover:
System is overclocked to 3.7G per core (default 3.2) and Skyrim runs multithreaded using the 4GHelper mod as the game can only buffer as much as 2G and Windows 7 allows Skyrim one thread unless the CPU core usage is maximum, it will allow a second core. Mine uses all 6. PC power management has been implemented and managed for high-end gaming. Screen resolution set to 1280 x 720 with all settings to ultimate, the game runs flawlessly, though glitches very slightly any higher resolution. Keep in mind, these parts were bought cheaply to build a complete PC ASAP at the time.
All parts were new, none were pre-owned, shortlisted or factory seconds. Take note that these parts were bought sometime late 2010 and will probably be half the price nowadays or you can get much better at the same price, only will run Skyrim at maximum quality and speed.
The lower spec Aurora can run Skyrim on max settings with no problem. An X51 will be sorted for years to come.
The term "Lag" is used when internet interference occurs and your connection to a server decreases and it causes skipping and cutting in in-game-actions. Skyrim is single player so there is no lag in Skyrim. If your having visual skipping in Skyrim then it is more then likely your Frame Rate dropping which means your graphics card of RAM cannot handle the game on your current graphics settings. Go to your visual settings and turn down your graphics settings a little and if this doesn't solve the problem then your computer cannot handle Skyrim's graphics.
The Alienware Aurora is a lower spec machine and will play Skyrim on max settings - the base x51 is even more powerful and should have no problem doing the same.
Just so you understand, the ATI Catalyst Control Center actually chews up some CPU resources as it attempts to add to what you can set in the Skyrim configurations directly... thus, giving you an instant frame rate hit by disabling it or not assigning Skyrim specific graphic profiles. You can simply use NotePad and edit the INI file as it has loads more Skyrim specific settings than the CCC, which only has generic graphic tweaking functions. Go and seek the Nexus forums on Skyrim tweaks to see how it is done to really enhance your game.
