What is Heterochrony?

Heterochrony takes on a few different forms. In Predisplacement, a character begins developing earlier in the descendent lineage than it did in the ancestor. On the flip side, Postdisplacement is when a character begins developing at a later stage in the descendent lineage when compared to the ancestor. In both cases, the character does not change, only the timing of developmental events. In Acceleration, the character develops at a faster rate in the descendent than in the ancestor. On the flip side, Neoteny is when the character develops at a slower rate in the descendent lineage when compared to the ancestor. In both cases, the character itself is not affected; rather the growth rate is. With Hypermorphosis, a character continues developing beyond the point at which it stopped in the ancestral lineage. On the flip side, Progenesis is when the development of the descendent's character stops progressing before the point at which it stops in the ancestral lineage. In both cases, the character itself will change. Hypothetical Example: The tail of an ancestral feline species grows to 27 inches in 2.0 years. The feline species splits into 2 descendent lineages. One feline descendent lineage splits into a species(we will call it 'Species X') that maintains the 27 inch growth and the 2.0 year growth time; AND a species(we will call it 'Species Y') that maintains the 2.0 year growth time but the tail grows to 29 inches. This is an example of Heterochrony, specifically an example of Heterochrony through a combination of Hypermorphosis(more growth) and Acceleration(increased growth rate). If it were just Hypermorphosis, the tail would take more time to grow to 29". If it were just Acceleration, the tail would reach 27"... just sooner. Thus; it is a combination. Happens more often than you would think. :)

If the narrator is a character in the story how does the author tell the reader that characters name?

Very often the narrator is the main character, and their name will be present in the book blurb, on the back cover or inside the jacket. If not, there are many ways in which it can be revealed:The narrator may speak directly to the reader and introduce himself. This happens in the very first sentence of 'Moby Dick'. "Call me Ishmael."The narrator may speak directly to other characters in the story. This happens in "The Maltese Falcon'. "The name's Spade, Sam Spade."Other characters in the story may talk to or about the narrator. This happens in 'Speak to me no more of Venice.' "I was just settling into the deck chair like old men do when I heard a cry. "Hey Dobson, Charles Dobson, you old coot."The narrator may recount an instance where other characters are talking and a list of names comes up. It is left to the reader to figure out the narrator's name by elimination. This happens in 'The handmaid's Tale'.The narrator's name may be found upon a document or some other information medium. This happens in 'Crisscross'. "Stedman grabbed his hand and the page swooped to the floor where we could all see it. It was signed Veljenko."The narrator's name may be hidden in a word jumble or letter search in the actual text of the book. This happens in 'One One Seven Nine.'

What is the definition omniscent character?

"Omniscient" means "knowing everything" (omni = all; scient = knowing). Usually a story does not have a character who knows everything (unless the character is God or someone with supernatural powers, like Merlin), but many stories have an omniscient narrator. Sometimes the narrator of a story doesn't know everything. For example, the narrator of "Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There" says, "Alice did not venture to ask him what he paid them with, and so you see I can't tell you." However, other narrators do know everything, including what all the characters are thinking, and what happens in times and places that the characters have never seen. These are omniscient narrators.
