Before learning about the ways to point a limestone retaining wall or the best mixtures, let's understand
What is Pointing?
Pointing is considered as an act of filling the gaps between masonry units (most commonly known as joints) with a mortar to help prevent water from seeping into the masonry and the associated decay. This term is given to the finish that is between the bricks or stone used to build an establishment. Depending on the age of the building, the mortar used will either be made from lime or cement. An incorrect pointing job can cause various irreparable damage to the older buildings. Therefore, It is essential to understand what the mortar joints do for the fabric of the house and choose them accordingly.
What Is The Best Way To Point a Limestone Wall?
First Step
Rake out the existing mortar joints to the right depth. The depth that you remove will depend on the width of the brickwork. It should be approximately double. Carefully brush loose debris away from the surface and joint of the brick.
Second Step
Damp down the mortar joints and the brickwork. Make sure that you wet down the whole wall.
Third Step
Prepare the mortar adequately. If you have a pre-mixed mortar, drain the excess water on the top of it. Agitate the mortar to soften it so that it becomes malleable and workable.
Fourth Step
Place a small amount of mortar onto a hawk and then take a pointing iron or trowel to apply the material to the brickwork. Maintain the right consistency and try to work the mortar in the same direction pushing it into place as you go.
Fifth Step
Leave the mortar for several hours. Once it begins to carbonate, take a piece of wood (been cut at a 45-degree angle) and run it along the joint, applying even and consistent pressure.
Sixth Step
Add final touches by using a stiff scrubbing brush that can remove any excess mortar from the brickwork.

Natural Hydraulic Lime (NHL)
NHL 3.5 Moderate Natural Hydraulic Lime and NHL 5 Eminently Natural Hydraulic Lime are two of the best limestone mixtures used for permeable masonry materials.

It depends on the location, if the limestone wall is on the coast, ocean waves would cause it, if it's inland in Mexico or Florida for example.....slightly acidic rain water trickling down through the layers would dissolve the limestone creating caverns and stalactites and stalagmites. What causes the acidic water? Namely plants and decomposing matter that dissolve in the water from up above. Volcanic activity and pollution can cause acidic rain as well.
