There are 5 countries that produce the most tobacco. China has 2 million acres of tobacco plants. India is the next biggest producer, then Brazil, and then the US.
It grew in the south because the southern colonies grew more plantations with the hotter weather than the north. If you own a plantation you need people to work on it for you so they brought slaves to do that.
Using the early American colonies as a basis for this question, there were two major exports from the American colonies that went to Great Britain and other European nations. One was a new crop called tobacco. The second one, was cotton. The Southern colonies had an ideal climate for cotton and it soon surpassed tobacco as THE major export.

Tobacco played a important role in the economics of the thriteen colonies because it was the major export at the time. Another important crop was corn because they never heard of the plant until the settlers came to America.

Not much, if your a tobacco only store that is. Most of these stores are closing. We show as little profit as 1000 a year up to about 25,000 but in the last 2 years most tobacco only stores are showing a loss.
