There were the Allies, which included such countries as Great Britain, Russia, and the United States, and the Axis, which included Germany, Italy, and Japan. There were a number of other countries belonging to the Allies which were overpowered by Germany until the Allied three countries listed above freed them; these include Poland, France, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Greece.
