Catholic AnswerThe Catholic Church is the Mystical Body of Our Blessed Lord, Jesus Christ, who is God. Our Blessed Lord, Jesus Christ, while on earth, overcame Satan, thus the "Catholic Church" in and of itself cannot be weakened. That would be saying that God could be weakened, which makes no sense, and then He wouldn't be God. If you are asking what 2 major problems caused the Catholic Church to lose members, than the answer would be the same throughout history, which is nearly 2000 years at this point, the only things which cause people to leave the Church are 1) sin and 2) evil. So, no matter what year or era you are looking at, all you have to do is find the sin or the evil to find the answer. There are many but chiefly the splitting of Martin Luther and his followers is a big one (because the Protestant movement started) and then again the Renaissance science hurt the catholic church along with all modern day science. Losing the crusades also didn't help.
Roman Catholic Church
Lutherans began as a movement to follow the teachings of Martin Luther, a German Catholic Priest trying to solve systemic problems in the Catholic Church. The Reformed Church is theologically very similar, but was started by the Dutch. They are both major Protestant Denominations. Neither one is considered a part of the other.
The Roman Catholic Church
The only church that existed in this time was the Catholic Church.
the Armenian Apostholic church never splitted from the Catholic Church. there was a major separation of churches back in 451 AD (see: Council of Chalcidon), and the Armenian church is from one part of that separation, whereas the catholic - from another part.

First of all, there is no "Roman" Catholic Church, it's just the Catholic Church. Secondly, archbishops have always had the same role as they do today, they are bishops of a major diocese which is usually the head diocese of a province
Protestant Reformation
The MAJOR belief system in Rome is Roman Catholic. The city of Rome is commonly regarded as the ''Home of the Roman Catholic Church''.
Protestants did not reform the Catholic Church. They (Martin Luther, Henry VIII, etc) formed their own religions. The Catholic Church then reformed itself.
