I don't know if it's limited to three, but we do tend to speak of 1) Orthodox (very strict, literal observance); 2) Conservative (modified traditional observance) and 3) Reform (very tolerant of non-tradtional ideas). People also speak of 4) Reconstructionist, a form founded by Mordecai Kaplan which is atheist in doctrine and 5) Ultraorthodox, the sort of folks who will stone women by leaving their hair uncovered.

Perhaps a joke -- not intended to be an accurate assessment -- will illustrate: A Jewish family in a Christian community would like to participate in the Yuletide festivities and wonders if it would be all right to put up a Christmas tree. They take the following question to an Orthodox, a Conservative, and a Reform rabbi: "Rebbe, would it be all right if, in addition to the Chanukiah, we displayed a Christmas tree?"

The Orthodox response: "Oy! What are you thinking?! Of course not! Get out of my office, you apikorim (unbelievers)!"

The Conservative response: "Oh, I wish I could say yes, but, no, it just wouldn't be right. I'm sorry, I appreciate your situation, but no, you really shouldn't."

The Reform response: "Sure, why not? I mean, if you feel comfortable, go ahead. By the way, though, what's a Chanukiah?"
