Europe was isolated from the Americas, and vice versa. It was unknown that there was a new world there because no exploration was done. It was believed that either Europe was the edge of the world, or that there were only 3 continents.
He was trying to get to the east indies but ended up in the New World (Americas). He thought the world was 1/3 of its actual size.
