When a private company has shareholders, the profit, or some portion of it for distribution, is declared a dividend by the company's operators or directors. The amount of the profit is divided by the number of outstanding shares at the time of dividend declaration. Everyone holding a share receives that amount of money or other consideration as the company may deem appropriate. For example: A company has a $2 million profit and declares a dividend of $1 million. The other $1 million stays in retained earnings. If the company has 1 million outstanding shares, shareholders receive $1 per share. If you hold 1000 shares, your part of the dividend is $1000. Sometimes companies hand out extra shares instead of cash dividend checks.
There are two types of Shares 1. Equity Share 2. Preference Share Some times, if company earns large amount of profit, instead of giving dividend to the shareholder, it gives "Bonus Shares"

A cash dividend is a distribution of money from a company's profits to its shareholders on a per-share basis. Shareholders receive the dividend in cash, which they can choose to reinvest or use as they wish. On the other hand, share repurchase is when a company buys back its own shares from the market, reducing the number of outstanding shares. This can increase the value of the remaining shares, as well as potentially benefit shareholders through capital gains if they choose to sell their shares back to the company.

If you own shares in a publicly listed company (one where the shares are traded on a stock market) then, if the company makes a profit in a year, the profit is divided by the number of shares that exist and paid out to the share holders (in proportion to the number of shares they each hold). This payout is called a dividend.

Preference shares have preference over ordinary shares with respect to dividend payments and in the event of liquidation i.e. payments are made to preference share holders before any payments are made to holders of ordinary shares. Preference shares usually carry a fixed dividend amount, are usually callable at the option of the issuing company and generally have no voting rights. They may also have an option for conversion to ordinary shares. Detailed answer here: http://financenmoney.in/types-of-share/

Company can pay dividend in the form of bonus share without affecting the cash balance. For example if some one has 10 shares of $10 each, company simply can give him dividend of 5 bonus shares and now that person have 15 shares of total $100. So before bonus shares 10 shares of total of $100 Now 15 shares of Total of $100 In this way per unit share value reduce but company don;'t have to pay anything from cash and in this way cash balance doesn;t affected.
