There are numerous treaties that have granted Serbia increased authority or power, but the Serbians got preliminary independence from the Serbian Revolution from 1804 to 1815. This resulted in the Principality of Serbia (which had its own Serbian princes) with partial Ottoman military occupation. In the following decades, the autonomous principality expanded. The Ottomans were eventually forced out of the expanded territory in 1867, giving Serbia complete de facto self-rule. In 1878, the Treaty of Berlin recognized the independence of Serbia by foreign countries.
Serbia was controlled by Austria-Hungary for many years and they just wanted their independence just like every other country. They wanted to be free and have their own rules and government systems, not those that Austria-Hungary gave them.
