A Domain Name Server is a standard technology for managing the names of Web sites and other internet domains. DNS technology allows you to type names into your Web browser like compnetworking.about.com and your computer to automatically find that address on the Internet. A key element of the DNS is a worldwide collection of DNS servers.
A DNS server is any computer registered to join the Domain Name System. A DNS server runs special-purpose networking software, features a public IP address, and contains a database of network names and addresses for other Internet hosts.
DNS Servers keep a table of the URL's you have visited as IP addresses. Each URL matches to an IP address, so that you don't have to memorise the IP address (which is a lot of numbers) to visit your favourite websites, you only have to know the URL.
DNS is used for name resolution. Every node in a network (pc's, servers etc) has a unique IP address and a physical name. A DNS server holds a record of all names and their corresponding IP addresses. That way you dont have to remember a long, difficult ip (i.e. 192.168.24.125) all you have to remember is the name (JOHNSPC).
Domain Name System, commonly referred to as DNS, is the system which translates IP addresses to domain names and vice versa. DNS allows you to type in a website name and have our browser go to the correct IP address where that website is hosted.
Domain Name System is necessary because of visiting websites. Every website has a domain name and associated links. If domain name is not specified in server, you can not visit your intended sites.

A name server is the server component of the Domain Name System (DNS). DNS is one of the two main name spaces on the internet. The most important functions of these DNS servers is translating domain names and host names into corresponding numeric IP addresses.

Using reliable DNS servers is crucial to online success, for a regular website owner the most important of them are the name servers which are responsible for the online solution and with a static DNS you can rely on it instead of a random DNS server.

If a DNS server cannot find the answer to the DNS Query in its own database it will first query the forwarders (if there are any configured) and then ask the root server. root servers (by default) are the master DNS servers of the Internet.
There are mail servers, FTP servers, Web servers, DNS servers, DHCP Servers, those are the most common types
Domain name queries are handled by the DNS Servers. The most popular DNS server software is BIND 9.
