The number of merit badges in the Boy Scouts of America has varied from as few as 34 to as many as 132. There are over 150 Scouts as of 2011 who are known to have earned all available merit badges. Fly Fishing is the least earned overall, with only 7,458 total earned. In 2007, American Business was only earned by 539 people. As for unusual or peculiar, they had some pretty weird ones that were discontinued. Including Master-At-Arms, Nut Culture, and Taxidermy.
The badges are made of fabric. Most of the designs are embroidered on the badges but some are screen printed.
As Many As You Have EarnedThere is no limit to the amount of badges you can have on your profile; you can basically sport as many badges as you have earned. (To find out who has the most badges, see the Related question.)
For most Brownie Girl Scout and Girl Guide organizations, there is no particular order for the badges. If your organization requires a specific order for the badges, the guider/leader should be able to tell you what it is.
No they do not. At most camps, all they do is take a fairly easy swim test. They may require it to take some aquatics merit badges though.
There isn't a site that has them filled in, that defeats the purpose. However, if you purchase the merit badge pamphlets from the BSA, most (if not all) of the answers are contained within those pages. The BSA National Council. They take thousands (if not millions) of recommendations for new badges a year, and occasionally create new ones. The most recent example would be Scuba Diving.
Most badges will be available for purchase at the Scout Shop. If not, they may be available online or if it is a very special patch, you may have to apply through a form given to your advancement chair who then gives it to the district or council.
