Boy Scouts

Lord Robert Baden-Powell developed a training method which resulted in the foundation of the Boy Scout Movement in 1907. Today, the Scouting Movement is a worldwide movement with the aim of supporting young people in their physical, mental and spiritual development so that they may play constructive roles in society.

What is the 13th scout law?

No Scouting organization has more than 12 points in their version of the Scout Law. However some trainers have told new scoutmasters to 'remember the 13 point of the scout law...a scout is an adolescent.'

This mentoring is done to help the scouter remember to nurture rather than rebuke.

Why do the Boy Scouts use the buddy system?

"The buddy system is a way for Scouts to look after one another, especially during outdoor adventures. When your troop goes swimming, for example, each scout will be assigned a buddy. You keep track of what your buddy is up to, and he know at all times where you are and how you are doing. Now and then a Scout leader might call for a buddy check. That means that you must immediately hold up the hand of your buddy. If anyone is missing, everyone will know right away. The buddy system should always be used when a troop or patrol is hiking, camping, and participating in any aquatics activities. It's a way of sharing the good times and preventing the bad." (The Boy Scout Handbook eleventh edition, pg. 57)

What should you bring to Boy Scout camp?

You Troop and/or the camp should be able to give you a more complete list. Some of it will depend on where and when you will be camping, what facilities are at the camp and what activities you will be doing.

Personal effects like toothpaste, a tooth brush, a comb or brush, soap and shampoo are always needed. A roll of toilette paper, even if they say there are facilities to use, is always worth the weight and space no matter what (A good tip is to take a half used roll off the spool at home and use it for back packing and space is more needed).

You should have enough changes of clothing.

Rain gear.

Flashlight and extra batteries

Bug spray.

Generally food is provided but you may need a cup or plate and utensils - check with the camp or troop.

Sleeping bag and pillow.

A first aid kit should be available complete with treatment for sunburn, Tylenol and or Motrin, allergy meds.

Any prescription meds you take.

Tents are usually provided but you should make sure.

Bathing suit if there will be water activities.

The merit badge books for the badges you will be working on would be good.

Cards/ books to read/ games to play in the down time.

How long does it take to become an eagle scout?

The minimum is about 28 months.

The requirements for the ranks of scout, tenderfoot, 2nd class and 1st class can be worked simultaneously and there is no specific time required. It is generally considered a sign of a high quality unit if many of their boys achieve 1st class status within a year. Many take longer.

Star rank requires 4 months as a 1st class scout

Life rank requires 6 months as a Star scout.

Eagle rank requires 6 months as a Life scout.

So it is possible to joint the boy Scouts at age 11, be 1st class by age 12 and earn the Eagle rank 16 months later at the age of 13 or 14, but this is not common. Usually scouts do not earn the Eagle until about age 17 or 18. They must complete the requirements prior to their 18th birthday.

How do you become an eagle scout?

Work hard, earn the ranks up to, and the necessary merit badges, complete a major project and show that you possess the leadership skills that less than 4percent of all Boy Scouts have and then you have the right to sit in front of a board to earn your Eagle Scout award.

What do Boy Scout uniforms look like?

The full uniform is tannish shirt, pants and belt and socks. Mostly with green or red patches on the chest or arms. In the past the uniforms have been dark green. Scout uniforms look different in different countries, but what is characteristic about all of them is the triangular necker with its ends pulled through a woggle.

Often the boys wear shorts as well. The color of the tie changes depending on what rank they have, and the badges will change for the same reason as well.

How many volunteer hours are needed to be an eagle scout?

Putting aside the fact that there are specific service hour requirements for Life and Star rank, there is no specific hour requirement for the Eagle project. Some Troops and Councils improperly inject a minimum hour requirement, often times 100 total hours (by all participants, not just the scout), but such requirements are contrary to BSA rules. (See ACP&P).

What does the Boy Scout emblem mean?

Each part of the emblem represents something. This can be found near the front of the latest edition of the scout handbook on page 31. In the edition before that it is on page 10.

The basic shape, the Fleur-de-Lis, is reminiscent of the north point of an old sailor's compass. This shows that a Scout is able to point the right way in life as truly as the compass points it in the field and recalls a scout's skill with a map and compass.

The three points of the trefoil are like the three fingers used in the Scout sign. They stand for the three parts of the Scout Oath: duty to God & country; duty to others; duty to yourself.

The eagle and shield, national emblem of the US, stand for freedom and a Scouter's readiness to defend that freedom.

The two stars stand for truth and knowledge of the Scouting movement. They guide you by night and suggest a Scout's outdoor life.

The scroll is turned up at the ends to remind us of the corners of a Scout's mouth raised in a smile as he does his duty. The Scout motto is printed across the scroll.

The knot attached to the bottom of the scroll represents the Scout slogan, Do a Good Turn Daily.
