How do you operate or sew with a sun hand operated sewing machine?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Just bought one of these at an antique shop and was totally befuddled, but I'm an engineer so I enjoy the puzzle of getting things to work. Here's what worked for me, just successfully sewed up the bottom of a pants pocket.

Make sure that the thread will flow freely from the spool, through the two metal eyelets (looks like the end of a safety pin), and through the needle hole. If there's any resistance it will bind up. There's a thing on the side that looks like a pulley with a spring that you'd think the thread should go through but it doesn't. That's only to hold the thread when you're not using it.

I held it with the sharp end of the needle pointing away from me and the spool nearest my body, but you can probably do this either way. To get started, have the thread through the needle but NOT into the bottom of the machine. Pull about an inch or two of thread out the front (away from your body).

To start the sewing, lift the metal flange on the bottom (has two metal tabs on it and the hole that the needle will go through) and insert the fabric under it so that the needle will just barely touch the edge of the fabric when you squeeze. Each time you squeeze, the machine will pull the fabric through one stich-length, but you have to be sure that it's not binding. After the first few stiches, pause and make sure the end of the thread isn't caught under the flange, it likes to get caught there and give you trouble. Pull the end of the thread away from there.

After that, keep squeezing, make sure you squeeze it all the way down each time. Also make sure that the fabric sides easily through the flange. If there are folds in the fabric it might try to bind up. Any binding pretty much screws up the stich, so be careful.

When you get to the end of the stich, pull it out a few inches so you have some thread to tie off so the seam doesn't unravel. Do the same for the end you started with.

When you're done, secure the thread in that spring pulley so that it doesn't unwind itself in the drawer.

I didn't find anything on how to work this other than this unanswered question, so hopefully this helps someone!

Yes, and so should "Girl Scout".

In addition:

Girl Scout Brownie is a proper noun because it names a specific level of Girl Scouting, so yes, Brownie should be capitalized whenever referring to a Girl Scout Brownie.

Note: GSUSA changed the level names so that "Girl Scout" always comes first, so "Girl Scout Brownie" is the correct usage.

Where is the oldest Boy Scout camp in the us?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Camp Welch was founded in 1882 in Massachusetts.

The oldest camp (continuously operated, private) in the USA is Camp Highlands for Boys in Sayner, Wisconsin. Founded in 1904 by a group of parents from the University of Chicago Laboratory School who wanted their city-raised boys to have a wilderness and work experience, Camp was first managed and then owned by Harry O'Gillet...the Headmaster from the "Lab School". Camp Highlands was not the first camp in the US... there were a small number of others, but they have since ceased operations. Camp Highlands derives its name from the fact that it is located in the "Highlands of Wisconsin," which is an area of land and lakes about 30 miles square in Vilas County. The camp occupies two peninsulas at the Northeast end of Plum Lake, and sits surrounded by the Northern Highlands State Forest. The primary architect of Camp Highlands for Boys was Doctor William J. Monilaw. "Doc" bought the camp in 1914 after having been a counselor there since 1911. "Doc" was the school doctor and athletic trainer for the "Lab" school. Doc followed through with the original concept of providing a wilderness and physical work experience for the campers but along with that he stressed character building. After 45 years of building and directing, at the age of 85, Doc sold camp to: Norvil and Cleo Beeman, Anthony and Lucille (Mickey) Anthony, Unk and Alice Nelson, Orville (Snow) and Miriam Nothdurft, Ralph Magor and Bob Mannschott...a group of counselors hoping to keep camp going. When Norvil, Tony, Unk, Ralph and Bob passed away, Lucille Anthony and the Nothdurfts were joined by Mike and Sharon Bachmann. Mike Bachmann started as a camper in 1950 and has been continuously since. The staff member with the greatest number of summers is Mike's spouse Sharon, who has attended continously (originally as the daughter of parents Snow and Mim Northdurft) since 1944. The two met at camp. Mike Bachmann has directed Camp Highlands for Boys since 1963. He is joined by his son Andy, who took the title of Co-Director in 2007, and has attended since 1974. Sharon Bachmann manages the camp kitchens and Highlands Lodge (an area of camp for guests). Notable alumni include Heisman Trophy winners' Jay Berwanger and Nile Kinnick, American Advisor and Ambassador George Kennan, Senator William Proxmire, and Managing Partner of Edward Jones, John Bachmann (brother of Mike).

What percentage of the American public are eagle scouts?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The BSA registration forms make race self described and optional so there are no accurate records of membership or awards / ranks sorted that way.

It is believed that Arican Americans are underrepresented in Scouting in general, a situation the BSA is actively attempting to correct, with about 11% of scouts estimated to be African. About 4% of scouts earn their Eagle but weather an African American scout is more, equally, or less likely to attain Eagle is unknown.

User Avatar

The answer to the question when did Scouting Start in the US, is contained in Colin Walker's book, 'The Dawn of the World Scout Movement', published in 2008. The small town of Burnside Kenntucky had a Scout Group formed formed by Mrs Myra Greeno Bass who visited Great Britain in early 1908. On her return home she formed the Eagle Troop with her husband Willam. The boys wore red kneckerchiefs. Horace Smith was the first troop leader. The troop established in 1908 predated the BSA by two years. The Eagle troop were not the only 1908 Scout Group formed under American 'jurisdiction'. In the same publication as above Scout Historian Colin Walker details the formation of a Scout Group in an American College/School in Smyrnia, Asia Minor called 'The American Collegiate Institute for Boys. The group was documented in the 14th November edition of the UK Scout Magazine. Colin Walker . Author Scouting Milestones www.scouting.milestones.btinternet.co.uk
