There was no major disaster that occurred at the House of Commons in 1916. However, during World War I, the building was damaged by German air raids in 1917.

In the days of Charles 1, John Pym was the senior figure in the House Of Commons, what is known nowadays as the Leader of the House. A Puritan, he was against the King, and probably the biggest thorn in his side. The House of Commons chamber was rebuilt in 1949, following bombing in the Second World War which destroyed much of the chamber. Westminister Palace, the building which houses the House of Commons, was built between 1840 and 1870, after a fire destroyed much of the original building.
