For the Confederates it was a great victory as the Army of the Potomac under the command of Joseph Hooker was defeated. Many military historians say that this battle was Lee's greatest victory because of the way he outwitted his opponent while his army was outnumbered. Victory came at a tragic cost though for the Confederates as it was here that General Thomas J."Stonewall" Jackson was wounded by friendly fire. He died 8 days later. For the Union it showed that the "crisis in Command" continued in the Eastern Theatre.

But Lee specialised in wrong-footing his enemy, and Hooker was forced to fight in an unfavourable position. This caused him to lose his nerve, and Stonewall Jackson caught him off-guard. The result was a stunning victory for the Confederates, though it cost Stonewall his life.
The Battle of Chancellorsville was one of Robert E. Lee's greatest victories. It came however at a severe cost. In this battle General Stonewall Jackson was wounded and died several days later. Lee had lost one of his best generals. At Stone Mountain near Atlanta, Ga. there is a monument for Confederate heroes and Jackson is honored there.
